CBPS organised a workshop titled “The Road Map to Women’s Empowerment: a Mahila Samakhya Meeting and Reflective Workshop” on 23 October, 2017 at the Radisson Blue Atria Hotel, Bangalore. The workshop was organized as part of our ongoing research project on women’s empowerment, titled “Assessing the Impact of Women’s Action Groups on Social Change in India”.
The objective of the meeting was to facilitate discussion on the pathways of integration of the Stree Shakti Programme (SSP) and the Mahila Samakhya (MS) in the state and to review the proposed plan of activities, roles, and responsibilities that will aid in the integration of the objectives of both the programmes.
To guide this process, Ms. Uma Mahadevan-Dasgupta, Principal Secretary, Women & Child Development, Government of Karnataka, set the agenda for the day by sharing her expectations from both the programmes, especially focusing on the complementary nature of the programmes, so that the larger objective of women’s empowerment in the state can be met. Ms. Kameshwari Jandhyala from the Educational Resource Unit and Ms. Prasanthi from the Bhumika Women’s Collective acted as facilitators for the workshop and were able to identify the key steps that MS should take in the next few months so as to ensure a smooth integration of function in the villages and beyond.
